Increase Mobility

Our SmartPGH successes will not be measured in how many new technologies we’ve developed and used, but rather how these transportation projects have improved people’s lives. New transportation routes from previously disconnected neighborhoods, autonomous shuttles and a partnership with the The Allegheny County Department of Human Services (DHS) are are all efforts aimed at helping those who need it most.

Programs Created to Increase Mobility

Mobility Optimization Along “Smart Spines”

We’ve been using technology developed at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) to reduce emissions and decrease traffic since 2012. Now we’re focused on expanding that effort and including the most heavily traveled roads in Pittsburgh—”Smart Spines”—to make them safer.

Smart Streetlights

SmartPGH will allow for the conversion of almost 40,000 streetlights to LED technology. They will also be equipped with sensors and the result will be energy savings and increased safety and mobility.

Autonomous Shuttle Network

Pittsburgh has long been a leader in connected automation technology, using sensors and communication systems to support self-driving safety and performance. We will be demonstrating the safe operation of autonomous electric vehicles (EV) shuttles as part of SmartPGH.

Mobility Technology

The City and SmartPGH Consortium members will embark on three pilots related to populations with specific and unique transportation needs. These pilots will demonstrate the intersectionality of Smart City technology with healthcare and human services.
