We’re testing adaptive traffic signal technology developed at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) to reduce emissions and lessen traffic. An LED streetlight conversion will also provide an energy savings of up to 60%. Equipped with sensors, the streetlights can collect and transmit data to keep pedestrians and cyclists safe.

Mobility Optimization Along "Smart Spines"

We’ve been using technology developed at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) to reduce emissions and decrease traffic since 2012. Now we’re focused on expanding that effort and including the most heavily traveled roads in Pittsburgh—”Smart Spines”—to make them safer.

Smart Streetlights

SmartPGH will allow for the conversion of almost 40,000 streetlights to LED technology. They will also be equipped with sensors and the result will be energy savings and increased safety and mobility.
